Capitalist’s Guide to
Nectar Collection
Bee GDP is a fictional narrative about bees striving to solve colony collapse by introducing new technology. I construct the technologies that increase honey production capabilities within this context. As capitalist economic policy suggests, increasing production improves the lives of the working class by financing quality-of-life projects such as educational and medical facilities.
The project explores the capitalist and colonialist epistemology defining our relationship with nature. More specifically, it critiques the language we use to characterize analogs between ourselves and our environment, diminishing the existence of the honey bee and the human to one of production.
Capitalist’s Guide to Nectar Collection is the first optimization of the honey bee workflow with the introduction of Nectar Receptacles. The receptacles are designed to be installed at sites where honey bees collect nectar. As an alternative to flying great distances between the collection site and the hive, the receptacles provide a nearby dispensing point for workers.
